What make-up can’t hide

Cosmetics are such a blessing to women around the world. Want to cover a blemish? Grab some foundation! Want to extend your eyelashes? Mascara to the rescue! But have you ever thought about what make-up can’t hide?

You can have on all the make-up your face can hold, but if your heart is sad, it can be seen in your eyes. I know this from personal experience. What’s the remedy? Don’t  apply extra eye-shadow. You won’t fool anyone with that. What’s needed is time spent in the presence of your Father in the word. Only Christ can mend a broken heart. Only He can permanently wash away your tears, whether you cry them inside or out.

Who the Son sets free is free indeed (John 8:36), so being in bondage to sadness is against the will of God. He came for you and me to have life more abundantly (John 10:10). That doesn’t mean we will not experience sad times, but it does mean that we shouldn’t be consistently sad. How do I know? Because Christ is all powerful and there are no limits to what He can do. If we live defeated, it’s because we choose to.

I’ve been there, and when I go there it’s only because I’ve taken my eyes off the Lord and placed them on myself or on my troubles. But here’s the thing, God says what we go through is a light affliction (2 Corinthians 4:17). And if we’re not going through for Christ, we are talking feather-weight. Ever been nailed to a cross? Now that’s a heavy burden!

So before you put on your make-up,  go before the Lord, and ask Him for His joy. It is your strength. It will give you the gleam in your eyes that only God’s love can provide.  Bring Jesus the ashes of your life and He will turn it into beauty (Isaiah 61:3) — the kind of beauty that overshadows make-up.

No lipstick day: In the interest of full disclosure

Okay, so I encouraged you a few months ago in the post “Quit overdoing it and get real with your beauty” to stretch out and do something you might not normally do. Well, I did it. I got real with my beauty…not on purpose at the time, but I left my house without putting on my lipstick. I’ve done this many times in a controlled experiment like running to the grocery store or to do a few errands, but this was different.. I went to work without it. We’re talking several hours here!!!! Hello?!! This was somewhat hard for me for two reasons: I lick my lips when I don’t  have lipstick on and the other reason is I’m  a big red lipstick fan who tries not to leave home without it.

I’ve always loved red lipstick. It’s my signature…the finishing touch if you will.  This is not the first time I’ve been without make-up , whether it’s foundation or lipstick, but one particular time (a long time ago) was the worst. I was out with a friend and I bugged her so much that she just gave me her car and I high-tailed it over to the nearest beauty supply store pronto. I fared a little better this time, but I did get weak toward the end of the work day and  put some lipstick on, but I’m   fessin’ up because I, too,  am a work in progress when it comes to beauty issues. However, I will challenge myself to do it again and this time without finishing the day with lips in a blaze of color.

There’s no greater pressure than the pressure we put on ourselves to attain a standard that quite often is unreal. Not even the models in the magazines  look as good as they do, but that’s the image many of us women chase. So if there’s any doubt about our worth and our real make-up, remember we are God’s craftsmanship. You wanna tell God He made a mistake?   Didn’t think so.  Instead, with a thankful heart to  Jesus, the Creator of all things,  ( All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.John 1:3) say this “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well (Psalms 139:14).

Take good care of your temple!

I just saw a story about a new treat (???) called fried butter. The inventor of this snack takes part of a stick of butter, wraps it tightly in dough and deep fries it. When it comes out of the deep fryer, you bite the dough and a surge of melted butter seeps through the bread and in your mouth. Incredible…huh? What will they think of next?

Fried butter is not the best option for those wanting to take good care of their temples.

Although, there is a hint of disgust for this overly indulgent carnival food, I have to admit I was slightly…well, okay, very interested in finding out how this cardiac arrest on a plate actually tasted. However, it made me think about the scripture which says, “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are (I Corinthians 3:17).”

Did you know you are God’s temple? When the Holy Spirit lives in you, you no longer belong to yourself. So it’s imperative that we take care of ourselves spiritually and physically. God’s word also says, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth (3 John 1:2).” God wants the best for us. He wants us to have good things and be in good health, but the prerequisite is our soul must be healthy first.

Reading the Bible is one of the best ways to feed your spirit.

When you ask God what He wants you to do, your decisions will be quite different than if you were making the decision on your own. God knows what’s best for us and He would never tell us to do anything that would damage our physical bodies. We can act like we don’t have an expiration date, but it doesn’t change the fact that none of us are getting any younger and what we do in these bodies today will show up in these same bodies tomorrow.  So lay off the fried butter, drink lots of water, eat your fruits and vegetables, and get your exercise daily.

Be proactive in taking care of your temple physically and spiritually.

Be informed about what you put into and on on your physical body. Invest in yourself and buy the good products. No frills is understandable in this economy. Many of us are doing what we can to make our budgets work, but sometimes you need to treat your temple to the best quality products you can afford.

There’s also no need for us to look shabby either. Represent the kingdom of God well! Look your best. Ask the Holy Spirit how to dress your temple? Yes, He will give you the answers to what looks best on you. The word doesn’t say “…acknowledge Him in all thy ways and He shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3:6).” for nothing.

Even more than the physical, think about the things you put in your body spiritually. Only Christ is good enough to feed the spirit and nurture the soul. Take good care of your temple; it’s on loan from the Lord and you will have to answer for what you do to it.

Forty is not the Brand New Twenty: Learn to age gracefully!

Gospel singer Cece Winans has had a long career in the music industry and is still Godly beautiful as she gets ready to celebrate her 46th birthday in October.

There is a God! This is the truth! It’s evident in the circle of life, especially in the final round where you have more knowledge and less control. Aging is a humbling process, sometimes hair starts growing where it just shouldn’t, or hair stops growing where it should. Then there’s the discovery that although getting down was easy, getting back up…well that’s the beast! Don’t despair… with Godly living you have so much to look forward to in your older age.

David prays a prayer that we can identify with, if we have lived a life unto God. He prays: “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth (Psalms 71:9). He acknowledges that the physical power and strenghth that he once had is gone, but He depends on the Lord to take care of Him. The end of David’s story tells us: “And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead (I Chronicles 29:28 ).” Want to know a secret? The power and strength that He had in his youth…it was all God’s anyway. How else could he have defeated the gargantuan Goliath with a slingshot and stones?  God tells us that His promises in Him are yea and Amen (2 Corinthians 1:20)…that means’s He’s got you and He even throws in your children for good measure.

As women, we live in a society where our confidence can be so tied to our looks.  We live in an age in America where many women simply don’t want to be their age. Surely, you’ve heard the expression “Forty is the brand new twenty,  and fifty is the brand new thirty.” Well, if that’s true we are living in a very immature, self-centered society. How will young women know how to age gracefully if nobody’s doing it? Where is the wisdom that comes from age? It’s the responsibility of older women to transfer that wisdom. Read what Titus: 2:3-5 has to say about this. After telling the aged men to be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, and in patience, the word of God says:

3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

It may seem like a huge responsibility, but to whom much is given, much is required (Luke 12:48).  We don’t just gather years for nothing. We gather years to pass on experience, testimonies, mercy, grace, love, and to be the example of how God really can keep you even in your old age (those that belong to Him).  God knows how to keep his children physically? Not everyone is going to experience wrinkles and skin that crinkles.  There will be some women who have a youthful appearance that is God-given. It’s also not a sin, to use helps in order to beautify and maintain yourself. However, if things start to shift, sag, grow, or appear out of nowhere; remember this: “The hoary head (gray hair) is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness (Proverbs 16:31).

Feels like a Woman

The natural beauty of the creation called woman.

Have you ever really wondered what the first man and woman looked like? Adam and Eve must have been some creation, especially since man was made in the image of God.  The best I can figure is he must have looked something like Duane “The Rock” Johnson multiplied by infinity. Since Eve was the first person to wear the title “woman,”  oh what a woman she must have been!  Whatever beauty is, it was surely  poured in  heaps and droves upon that first feminine work of perfection.

Before the fall of man,  woman was flawless, a perfect creation, hand-crafted by God. Imagine the curves of her hips, the grace her  form, the silkiness  of her skin. No doubt, she had Adam at “Hello!”

Sadly, after a brief, unfortunate conversation with a selfish snake, her beauty began to wane as  quickly as she could say, “Wanna bite?”  However, the daughters she left behind still attain to the beauty she once took for granted. Now, the natural curves have to be maintained with diet and exercise and the grace and form,  inherent in some, is learned in others.

Then there’s the moisture and silkiness of the once perfect skin,  emulated at birth,  later dries out unless lotion and moisturizers are applied early and often. Yes beauty is still a natural feminine quality, but sustaining our beauty is a tactical daily task.

There’s physical beauty and then there is the beauty that no man can take away from you — true beauty,  only found in a relationship with your Creator. He formed and shaped us in His image and whether or not we agree, He tells us in Genesis 3:19 “… for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

Yeah, taking that bite out of the forbidden fruit was pretty serious.  But God is gracious and merciful and gives us second chances, so returning to dust is not the end of the story.  Surely we will return to the dust, but with a relationship with Christ He will give you  “a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.  They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor(Isaiah 61:3).”   Now that sounds like the kind of beauty I can live in eternally.

Quit overdoing it and get real with your beauty!

Naturally beautiful actress Lisa Bonet is overly made-up for this artistic picture.

Sometimes we can be so convinced that we need “just a little more” that we forget the old adage: “Less is more.”   Accentuating natural beauty can be just the option that you need to achieve a more tangible you. It’s good to have those fierce days, where your look is so on fire people line up to watch you burn, but take a break. Relax sometimes.  Find that place where you are free to be the beautiful you that God made you to be, spiritually and physically.

We can overdo it sometimes when we go all out with the tons of make-up and the stiff, starched, gelled or perfectly tousled hair. Then there’s the lyed, overly dyed and laid to side hair that can be just as extra.  Who are we trying to impress? It takes all that to impress yourself? You can be just as beautiful and fierce in a naturally beautiful way. Here’s a challenge  for you! What can you do with what you have?

There are simple things we can do to make sure our natural beauty shines. Grooming your eyebrows is one of those things. Making sure eyebrows are shaped and neat. Whether waxed, plucked, or threaded, groomed eyebrows make eyes pop. Take off the falsies, you can put them back on later, but mascara is still a good way to tame those lashes by lining them up and making them stretch. Don’t your eyelids feel much lighter? Also, pay attention to your water intake  so that your pores will be well-hydrated for fresh and radiant skin. Experiment with your hair – have you ever tried a simple ponytail or a short pixie-do? Both styles are guaranteed to open up your face. Get whimsical with your hair, get romantic with it!  Find a movie or a magazine with a hairstyle that you can do yourself and try it.

Wash away all of the world's expectations of how you should look.

Have you ever had a make-up less day? I know. I know it can be scary, but challenge yourself to accept you for you. When you take all the make-up off you are staring yourself in the face anyway. Okay maybe when you wake up in the morning, the birds aren’t singing and circling your head like a halo exclaiming that you are the “fairest of them all,” but there is hope for a naturally beautiful look as you walk out that door to take charge of your day. If you don’t want to take off all the make-up, why not challenge yourself to a more subtle look? If your crutch is fire-red lipstick, you can try a nude shade, or maybe a brown or a soft pink. If you pile on the foundation, don’t use as much. If you do powerful eyes and powerful lips at the same time, choose one or the other.  Although you may use cosmetics to conceal flaws, your whole face is not flawed. The devil is a liar! So don’t let the only time that you see your face natural be at the end of the night when you’re taking off your make-up to go to bed.

Don’t want to take the challenge during the week when you are at work or at school? Well use your lazy weekends to let your natural beauty shine. Experiment on a Saturday morning before you head off to the grocery store or to take the kids to soccer practice.  Whatever you do, don’t let yourself become a tube of lipstick or a false ponytail. These things are all well and good, but they are not who you are. They are accents. Now if you don’t remember anything at all, here’s the most important thing you should remember: there is no better way for your  true beauty to be realized than with a relationship with Jesus Christ. You are His creation and He will continue to beautify you from the inside out.
