The Best Looking You on a Budget

Believe it...You can look your best on a budget!

In these times of economic challenges, there is still no excuse for not being the “best looking you” you can be. This is a message to me as much as it is a message for you because there are times when I reason and make excuses for not doing what I need to do to keep my appearance up. Now I don’t let it go to the extreme because as a woman, I can’t get too far out there…the girly girl kicks in really fast. However, I say this as an encouragement to those who have found themselves in the position of looking at their wardrobe and feeling  “the blahs!” Even if funds are not abundant, that’s not a reason for you not to put your best foot forward in your appearance. A very wise woman knows that even if she only has two blouses and two pants she should first thank the Lord for having what she has and then keep the two blouses and pants washed and neat.  Also in acknowledging Christ in all of your ways, God can show you how to accessorize and mix up your wardrobe.

It’s like those mothers who turned canned meat and instant potatoes into a meal fit for a king. You do the most with what you have. The Bible even tells us to be faithful in a few things and then God would make us ruler over many(Matthew 25:21) . It also tells us to humble ourselves before the Lord and He will exalt us (Luke 14:11). No you may not be able to get the designer names, but with a little work you could look just as good. And guess what? I have a friend who gets whatever designer names he wants at the thrift stores. He has staked them out and gets top-quality clothes with very little coinage.

There are lots of chic finds at affordable prices to be found at consignment shops, vintage stores and thrift stores.

So we have established that it takes work. You can’t just wish for it. Check out your local thrift stores, consignment shop, vintage shop or outlet store. True outlet stores have deep discounts, so investigate and find out where some of your thrifty friends do their shopping. You may find out that those fancy duds don’t cost as much as you think they do.

Check out your major department stores because clearance prices can be extreme.  Nordrstrom  Rack and Macy’s are fantastic with their clearance racks. You also should look at your Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Burlington and Ross stores as well.  I saw a woman the other day who looked so great I had to ask her where she got her whole outfit.  The boots she was wearing may have been $150 to $200 and she got them for around $35 dollars at Marshalls. Her whole outfit was from Marshalls and it was beautiful.  And look, let’s get out of this prima donna /diva status where we can’t rifle through the racks.  Yes, it can be a little frustrating if you really like to have things orderly, but treat it like a treasure hunt where the ends justify the means.

After Christmas is the perfect time to see the deep discounts. Remember that retail is always a season ahead, so if you buy off-season (as in a season behind), you will be able to stock up for the next year. Don’t be stuck on buying something because it’s the style right now. Buy smart!

Some say the best things in life are free. Will you be to proud to accept it? My church does a yearly giveaway and we are instructed to give things that we would want to receive. We are told that we should give that thing that we want to keep. See, when you give like that you are sure to be a blessing.  I’ll never forget a family that came to the giveaway and found a winter coat for their son. It was a big black, bubble-coat. It was quite stylish, so the little boy who was probably about eight or nine was happy to receive it. More than the look on the little boy’s face was the look on his father’s face.  I could have cried when seeing the relief it brought to that father who would not have to figure out how to adjust the family’s finances or neglect paying a bill to  get his little boy a coat. Look on listings like Craigslist and you will see a section that simply says FREE. You will find listing for giveaways, people simply wanting to give all kinds of articles from furniture to exercise equipment to clothes.

You can find things that represent you within your budget, but you have to be willing to do the work. Aren’t you a worthy cause?

The Ultimate Gift!

Jesus was our gift at the manger and on the cross!

There’s something about the holidays! Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or  New Years,  the holidays bring out the extreme optimism or pessimism of human nature. I prefer to focus on the optimism. Christmas, for instance, is a time that people are thinking about someone other than themselves. Giving is a really big thing around Christmas, as well it should be. Christmas is about giving and it all stems from the greatest gift the world has ever received – the gift of Jesus Christ.

Imagine being in a nice comfy position sitting with God, the Father. Your home is heaven and every need is catered to. All the angels rejoice 24-7  because you are God, the Son. You are the only begotten Son and you love God, Your Father. There’s no place you’d rather be than with Him, after all you  are one with Him. Now, imagine giving that up because your creation, the ones you created in your image, have sinned against you. Not really a motivating factor, but it was for God. The Creator’s mind was in rescue mode to save His creation.

God knew mankind was on  a fast-track to Hell unless a Savior could get them out of their mess.  Sure, the Lord could have sat back and let us all go to Hell, but that’s not the kind of God we have. Our Father and our Savior, put their plan into action and Jesus gave up his throne on high, to do His Father’s will.  So as the Bible tells us, Jesus came to this world, being born of a virgin in Bethlehem and that little babe grew up to live a sinless life, which would be sacrificed to atone for the sins of the world.

Jesus’ sinless life was given as a gift to the world; some would receive Him and others wouldn’t. Nonetheless, He continues to be our gift and His life and death makes  it possible for His children to receive eternal life with Him. That’s a reason to give God glory.

In our gift-giving this holiday season, let’s not forget about the Greatest Gift, Jesus Christ, who gave us the ultimate gift of salvation. He gave us a reason to be optimistic, don’t you think? It’s easy to get caught up in all the commercialism that Christmas time has come to symbolize, but if we keep the true Christmas spirit alive and well in our hearts and cherish the gift of Jesus Christ, we’ll be less likely to run after the false Christmas traditions! Beautifully yours, Avon Representative, Monica Johnson.

A Woman of Virtue is still timeless

Virtuous woman (Proverbs 31)

One of my favorite scriptures in all of the Bible comes from the book of Proverbs, chapter 31. Every woman and man should be exposed to this to know what kind of woman is honorable in God’s sight. Whether married or single, shouldn’t we want to be the kind of woman that God calls virtuous? As Christians, we are  all in planning mode for a wedding that will take place in heaven – might as well prepare. Ever heard of the five foolish virgins? We don’t want to be like them (Matthew 25:1-13).

Line yourself up with this scripture and see if you are walking God’s word or not measuring up at all. If you find that you aren’t measuring up, just know that this is a goal we can attain. If it wasn’t tangible God would not have put it in the Good Book.  All on our own we can’t do it, but Philippians 4:13 says, ” I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Proverbs 31:10-30

10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. 31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Is your storehouse filled for the winter? Store up!

Your AVON lady is armed with products to winterize your skin!

It’s time to do some winterizing! You know how you drag your car to the mechanic to get it prepared  for the winter. You are no different. You need to start preparing yourself for the winter too. My pastor always gives our congregation wisdom every year about building up your storehouse. There’s all kinds of wisdom in building up your storehouse physically and spiritually. If you were on the east coast last year for that unbelievable winter of 2009-10, you were in a position of appreciation if you didn’t have to go out in the 30, 40, 50 feet of snow to get something to eat.

Every year it’s the same. Before a big snow storm the lines are horrendous. No bread. No milk. No toilet paper to be found.  But what if you prepared and had all of those things  in stock. You could just chill while snacking on your Cheese puffs and  grilled cheese sandwich!

Being fully stocked for the winter is a blessing!

Preparation precedes blessings, so bless yourself and get winterized. Your body needs winterazation too (I don’t care if winterization is not a word—I like it! ). AVON has all kinds of products to help you get prepared for the winter.

AVON Moisture Therapy Body lotion is the perfect way to stock up for the winter.

If there is one thing you cannot get enough of in the winter, it’s lotion. We don’t want to look like the Abominable Snowman with our ashy hands. Moisture is of the utmost importance. Besides being ashy, your hands can also crack and bleed without proper moisture, so bring on the moisture with the handy purse size Skin So Soft or Moisture Therapy hand cream. Moisture Therapy also allows you to go MEGA with your preparation with their 1 liter bottle (33.8 fl. oz) of Moisture Therapy Body Lotion in A, C, E Pro-Vitamin Complex, Oatmeal, and Intensive.

There is also no denying the importance of facial skin care.  Your face bears the brunt of abuse during winter because it is typically not covered. That’s why AVON offers Solutions Winter. The Enjoy the Day Cream SPF, Fabulously Clean Cleanser, Moisturizing Mask, and Nourishing Night Cream will aid in shielding your skin from the harmful effects of winter’s wrath.

Winter can also be a terror to the toes as well. Your feet could use a little tender lovin’ care. Oh how they long for the days of being pedicured and carefree in those barely-there strappy sandals. Well, cry no more little piggies! AVON has a very popular line of  products called FOOT WORKS. It’s like having your own pedicure salon. FOOT WORKS come in in different fragrances like Vanilla & Brown Sugar or Cherry Ice or if you’re not into the scents go with the original. Try the Cooling Foot Spray, Moisturizing Socks, Moisturizing Lotion, the Thermal Exfoliating Scrub, or Exfoliating Bar Soap. They are all great products for getting your tippy toes and feet in tip-top condition.

Get those feet in tip-top shape with AVON's FOOTWORKS!

Remember I did say there was a spiritual aspect to building your storehouse. We can’t stop the winters and storms of our lives from coming, but we can be prepared. How? By reaching into our reserve. Lay down the foundation of  praying,  fasting, reading the word   and having a real relationship with Jesus. Don’t do it for tradition or ritual’s sake but because you realize He is the author and finisher of your faith.

Get serious about making sure your spiritual storehouse is fully stocked.  Make room everyday as you approach daily at His gates awaiting His word for your life. There’s no time to search for a relationship with Jesus when you’re going through. Yes, He may very well have mercy but wouldn’t it be better to already have that relationship established? We want God to be able to recognize us as one of his children when we are in the midst of a battle.

God tells us to not to lay up treasures on this earth but to “...lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven where neither moth nor dust rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal (Matthew 6:20).” Store up!

No lipstick day: In the interest of full disclosure

Okay, so I encouraged you a few months ago in the post “Quit overdoing it and get real with your beauty” to stretch out and do something you might not normally do. Well, I did it. I got real with my beauty…not on purpose at the time, but I left my house without putting on my lipstick. I’ve done this many times in a controlled experiment like running to the grocery store or to do a few errands, but this was different.. I went to work without it. We’re talking several hours here!!!! Hello?!! This was somewhat hard for me for two reasons: I lick my lips when I don’t  have lipstick on and the other reason is I’m  a big red lipstick fan who tries not to leave home without it.

I’ve always loved red lipstick. It’s my signature…the finishing touch if you will.  This is not the first time I’ve been without make-up , whether it’s foundation or lipstick, but one particular time (a long time ago) was the worst. I was out with a friend and I bugged her so much that she just gave me her car and I high-tailed it over to the nearest beauty supply store pronto. I fared a little better this time, but I did get weak toward the end of the work day and  put some lipstick on, but I’m   fessin’ up because I, too,  am a work in progress when it comes to beauty issues. However, I will challenge myself to do it again and this time without finishing the day with lips in a blaze of color.

There’s no greater pressure than the pressure we put on ourselves to attain a standard that quite often is unreal. Not even the models in the magazines  look as good as they do, but that’s the image many of us women chase. So if there’s any doubt about our worth and our real make-up, remember we are God’s craftsmanship. You wanna tell God He made a mistake?   Didn’t think so.  Instead, with a thankful heart to  Jesus, the Creator of all things,  ( All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.John 1:3) say this “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well (Psalms 139:14).

Do you remember your favorite doll?

Do you remember your favorite doll growing up? I do. My favorite was Dancerella. My parents were very diplomatic in how they chose dolls. We had our white ones, our ambiguous tan ones, and then we had the one’s that looked like us. My Dancerella was a big beautiful curly haired, black (We weren’t calling ourselves African Americans back then) doll. She was a ballerina who had her toes indefinitely pointed in perfect grace. She twirled, she whirled, and she was my joy,  at least for the first week until her batteries ran out. God bless them, but my parent’s weren’t that great with replacing batteries.

My next favorite doll was Cher. Yes, that’s right – Cher, the singer and actress. It was the 70’s and Cher was big. I think my parents probably liked her more than me, but I do remember the occasional Sonny and Cher show and all I knew is she had amazingly long black hair and a great little evening gown (no doubt a Bob Mackey original). My sister and I both had a Cher doll and she proved to be great for hours of entertainment.

Then there was my sister’s Christie doll. Christie was the Black answer to Barbie. No they weren’t in competition, but Barbie was White and Christie was Black. There were no Black Barbies or Latino Barbie’s like there are today, but there was Christie and with her on your lap, you could definitely say it loud: “I’m black and Im proud.” Her beautiful brown skin, chocolate brown hair and  golden highlights has been the inspiration for a many a hair coloring in the African American community. Don’t believe me? Take an informal survey among your African American friends in their mid 30’s and early 40’s…more than likely when you mention the Christie doll, a smile will come to their face.

This Christie Doll is sans highlights, and has a shorter haircut, but still every bit the beauty.

The last doll that had my heart from my childhood was Miss Piggy.  I loved the Muppets growing up and Miss Piggy had such attitude. I was nothing like her but she was just a hoot and a half. If she wanted it, she was going to find a way to get it…and that loud abrasive voice was a riot. My Miss Piggy Doll was on my bed with me at night when I slept. She had a hard plastic face, so she wasn’t so huggable, but she did make me smile.  Too bad we had that unfortunate shampoo incident…her hair never quite was the same, but I loved her anyway.

Growing up, one of my favorite dolls was Miss Piggy.

Dolls (action figures for guys) are such a wonderful way for children to play. There should be Academy Awards handed out for the stories children come up with during play time. Dolls are often a reflection of who we want to be when we grow up, whether it’s some aspect of their beauty or some aspect of their persona – whether Beach House Barbie or Nurse Barbie, something about those dolls appealed to us. I always loved the grace of my Dancerella, the comedy of Miss Piggy, the pride of beauty that I felt in my sister’s Christie doll, and with Cher it was pretty much all about her long straight hair.

Some of today’s dolls are way too racy. Did the toy companies forget they are marketing to little girls? Why do little girls need dolls with their bellies showing, tight or short clothing, and tons of make-up? Is that acceptable to parents? It shouldn’t be.

In order for little girls to become ladies, they first need to be able to see lady-like behavior. Children will model what they see most. So even their dolls should be brought in line with the female images you want them to emulate. The Bible tells parents to train them up in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart. They won’t depart because in their heart of hearts they know what’s right.

Take good care of your temple!

I just saw a story about a new treat (???) called fried butter. The inventor of this snack takes part of a stick of butter, wraps it tightly in dough and deep fries it. When it comes out of the deep fryer, you bite the dough and a surge of melted butter seeps through the bread and in your mouth. Incredible…huh? What will they think of next?

Fried butter is not the best option for those wanting to take good care of their temples.

Although, there is a hint of disgust for this overly indulgent carnival food, I have to admit I was slightly…well, okay, very interested in finding out how this cardiac arrest on a plate actually tasted. However, it made me think about the scripture which says, “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are (I Corinthians 3:17).”

Did you know you are God’s temple? When the Holy Spirit lives in you, you no longer belong to yourself. So it’s imperative that we take care of ourselves spiritually and physically. God’s word also says, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth (3 John 1:2).” God wants the best for us. He wants us to have good things and be in good health, but the prerequisite is our soul must be healthy first.

Reading the Bible is one of the best ways to feed your spirit.

When you ask God what He wants you to do, your decisions will be quite different than if you were making the decision on your own. God knows what’s best for us and He would never tell us to do anything that would damage our physical bodies. We can act like we don’t have an expiration date, but it doesn’t change the fact that none of us are getting any younger and what we do in these bodies today will show up in these same bodies tomorrow.  So lay off the fried butter, drink lots of water, eat your fruits and vegetables, and get your exercise daily.

Be proactive in taking care of your temple physically and spiritually.

Be informed about what you put into and on on your physical body. Invest in yourself and buy the good products. No frills is understandable in this economy. Many of us are doing what we can to make our budgets work, but sometimes you need to treat your temple to the best quality products you can afford.

There’s also no need for us to look shabby either. Represent the kingdom of God well! Look your best. Ask the Holy Spirit how to dress your temple? Yes, He will give you the answers to what looks best on you. The word doesn’t say “…acknowledge Him in all thy ways and He shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3:6).” for nothing.

Even more than the physical, think about the things you put in your body spiritually. Only Christ is good enough to feed the spirit and nurture the soul. Take good care of your temple; it’s on loan from the Lord and you will have to answer for what you do to it.

Don’t mistake my meekness for weakness!

Meekness demonstrates humility and strength in one.

Have you ever had a moment you would love to take back? Ever gained an understanding and wanted to apologize for the misunderstanding? I have one of those moments that I think about ever so often.

It all started with this statement: “You are meek!” Once, before I knew Jesus as my Lord and Savior,  someone said that to me, and I showed him just how meek I wasn’t. I literally snapped at him, because I thought that he was trying to call me weak. He explained that it was a compliment, but it was the last thing I wanted to hear. Meek = Weak...end of story.

Well, fast forward to getting an understanding in Christ and what do you know? Meek doesn’t equal weak.  My addition was wrong beacause I needed to subtract my pride from the equation. Meekness is a beautiful quality in God’s sight. Our meekness shows humility, patience under provocation, and our compliance to instructions. It’s important to be able to follow instructions without trying to be like Frank Sinatra and doing it “My way” or like Janet Jackson taking “Control.” Can you see how that’s beautiful in God’s sight? Hello!!! His name is God…He doesn’t need us calling the shots. He’s the shot caller. He has everything under control, even our lives.

Contrary to what Ms. Jackson told us, we don't always have to be in control.

Whenever we go to God in sincerity, acknowledging His power and relinquishing ours, that is a sign of meekness. A person who doesn’t lean to his/her own understanding and willingly gives up their control is teachable. Psalms 25:9 tells us: “The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.” It couldn’t get more awesome than that! God does the teaching when we give up the reins and demonstrate meekness.

Look at Jesus! At any time, Jesus could have said “Hold up! I’m God! I don’t have to die for these unappreciative, evil, unforgiving people.” Can you imagine if He did? Thank God He didn’t or we would all being looking at an eternal life in hell. Instead, Phillipians 2:8 tells us: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” You’ll never find a greater example of meekness than that.

Oh how I would love to apologize to the man whose head I chewed up and spit out for calling me meek. I’d love to tell him, “I finally get it!” Nonethess, I have to admit that I woudn’t recognize him if he was wearing a t-shirt that said, “I’m the one whose head you chewed up and spit out for calling me meek.” I guess I’ll have to chalk it up to a humbling life lesson  for me. As for you, remember meekness is beautiful in God’s sight because Meek + God = Strength…end of story!

Here’s what God has to say about the meek:

The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever (Psalms 22:26).

The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way (Psalms 25:9).

But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace (Psalms 37:11).

The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground (Psalms 147:6).

For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation (149:4).
